Merlin, Entanglement, Hunt
Navigating birds have an incredible ability to sense the earth's magnetic field--but just how do they do this? Discoveries published last year focus on retinal nerve cells which contain a tiny protein complex of MagR and cryptochrome. Crytochrome forms pairs of free radicals in response to blue or green light. MagR can be pictured as a tiny iron bar magnet that aligns to earth's magnetic field. The force of this field is extremely small as it passes right through all cells and proteins of the body. Since these magnetic fields are very weak, the incredibly small forces generated by pairs of entangled free radicals in superposition are not lost in the law of averages, but instead can play a significant role in sensing and signaling information about the local magnetic field.
